How to Load a Gym Sled Correctly

No training device is as straightforward to use as a gym sled, yet the simple act of loading it up can go wrong in many ways, resulting in unequal load, falling weights or even breakage of the frame.

Choose the Right Plates

Standard gym bumper plates and iron weightlifting plates with a diameter of 50mm or corresponding diameter are recommended. Make sure not to mix different plate types on the same post as they may be of different thickness and start to shift during use.

Match the Load to Your Surface

Outdoor turf and smooth indoor surfaces feel very different under the load of a sled. Therefore start off light and progress to the desired weight gradually and follow the principles of a sensible strength training program using progressive overload. Gym Sleds on rubber matting can feel immovable at first.

Centre the Weight on the Post

Evenly stack plates on top of each other, placing the bottom of each plate against the top of the plate below it. Be sure to secure each plate with a collar or locking pin before attempting to push the sled loaded with plates.

Check Your Sled Type

Open-post sleds will generally load from the top of the post and will require a collar to lock the plates in place, while enclosed-frame sleds may use a horizontal bar to support the weight of the plates. Check your specific model to confirm the method of loading the sled before attempting to use it. For Gym Sleds, visit https://uk.repfitness.com/collections/gym-sleds/.

Load sensibly, secure everything properly, and the sled will do its job.
